To say that Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is a pioneer in customer experience is a vast understatement. As you probably know, Zappos is always raising the bar in customer service and has taken customer loyalty management to a new level.
That’s why I got pretty excited when I saw this tweet from Tony a few months ago:

I immediately emailed him and asked for an advance copy, to which Tony and his team graciously provided a couple months later. They were even gracious enough to send me an extra copy, which you will have a chance of winning at the end of this post.
A Review of Delivering Happiness
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading the book. Was it going to be an autobiography? A Zappos company history? An out-of-the-box business guide to happier customers? A motivational book to help me discover my own happiness?
The answer is yes.
The book is a quick read because of how Tony structured it. There are many entertaining tales about Tony’s upbringing and personal life. He provides great stories from Zappos and even includes company emails that were sent during significant turning points (good and bad) in the company’s history. Interwoven into all that great storytelling are the core values that drive Tony and the Zappos team.
Tony is an interesting guy, and this book reflects that. You’ll get to read about his attempt to conquer the world through earthworm farming, the lucrative family-run button-making business, the computer-lab-lunch-club that got a little carried away with a sultry 976 number, the wild parties at Club BIO, why Tony kept his word and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, and how the Amazon deal finally happened.
This is not a typical business book, but you can get a lot of business value from it. To paraphrase Tony, the purpose of the book is to inspire you to make yourself, your customers, and your employees happier. That sounds like a noble cause to me.
Delivering Happiness – A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose (affiliate link) is available for order today. I recommend you buy a copy (or three) and share it with those around you. You can check out the Delivering Happiness website for more information on the book and the movement.
Or Maybe You’d Like a Free Copy?
As I mentioned above, I am going to give away one of the advance copies sent to me by Tony.
If you’d like a chance to win that free copy, please Tweet this post and leave a comment below about someone (or some company) that is delivering happiness. A winner will be selected at the end of this week.
A Note About Reviews
From time to time, I will review a product, book, or service that I have first-hand experience with. Some reviews here may include affiliate links (links that I will be meagerly compensated for if you purchase said product/book/service). Some are of products that have been sent to me in exchange for an unbiased review.
I do not endorse anything that hasn’t improved my life in some way and/or believe whole-heartedly that it can improve yours.
You can check out the full list of reviews here.

There is a local chain of restaurants her in Utah called Pounders Grill. It's a Hawaiian BBQ. The owners and staff make it a point to try to learn all of their customers names and give them hugs when they see them. They crank out great food, and understand the importance of making sure that their customers feel at home, and know they are among friends. Like Tony, they know that a great culture is the key to a thriving business full of loyal customers.
I have to give credit to Wells Fargo Bank-Even though they are not my bank, one of my employers banks with them. The office near my home has someone to always greet you when you walk in-I feel like I walk into a great retail store. Then they are also friendly, and use your name. They must have read the Zappos Culture book or something( I have it on my shelf-good book). Hopefully America's retail business read Tony's new book, and IMPLEMENT something from it, because it is sorely needed in retail in this country.
Not just a book A movement? Ok, I'm on board. Here's one you may take for granted, but this company really exists to deliver happiness. Can you guess? It's their tag line “Open Happiness”. It's Coke. I would have thought it just a tag line until I saw several presentations from Coke folks at the most recent SOCAP conference (Society Of Consumer Affairs Professionals).
Because happiness as a way of living permeate every aspect of Coke's culture, they get my vote. (And btw – they get social media! They have given over control of the most recognizable brand on the planet to its customers) Check out some of the awesome things Coke is doing @ cocacola.com
